A Creative Way To Do Hifz Revision [Free Template] (6 min read)
As always, I’ve been experimenting with an idea. In this case, modelling a memory technique designed to optimise learning. I’ve asked the question of whether it can be used to develop a technique to help us memorise or revise the Qur’ān.
Whether you consider yourself to have great memory or struggle to retain things, it’s always worth looking out for techniques that will help you remember better. That’s why I I’ve shared so many of them with you: like shuffling or the letter grid!
The system I’ve been testing takes inspiration from flashcards and spaced repetition. Yes, I’ve previously mentioned how you can use flashcards, particularly for Hifz mistakes. But, the following system has many benefits.
Using Flashcards For Hifz (5 min read)
Students use them for revision. Students use them to memorise languages. Whether you’re using an index card, a flashcard, a flashcard maker app, cardflow, or any note paper, it has come in useful for so many.
Effective Techniques To Make Your Quran Revision Stronger (5 min read)
These techniques are not necessarily new, but they may not be as commonly used or widely known as you’d think. Incorporating them into your revision routine can give you an extra edge in your journey towards mastering the Qur’ān.
These techniques are aimed at both those still memorising and those who have already memorised significant portions or the entire Qur’ān.
📖 THE DIARY OF A HĀFIZ
This is where we try to learn by watching others memorise. Today I share a roundup reporting the progress of a brother and a sister in their pursuit of memorising the Qur'ān.
Muhammad, 36, still on Surah an-Nisā’
Background: After forgetting what he memorised (half the Qur'ān) and kept struggling to start again. So he decided to share his diary and mission with us. After 19 weeks of struggle, he finally started. It took him a few months to do a few Juz’. He’s a few months away from having a years diary complete.
What he accomplished last week (days 311 to 317):
"Alhamdulillah. I finished three quarters of the 6th Juz’ now.
For revision, I have done 3/4’s of the first 5 juz’ (that’s like reading 2.5 juz’) a day. I missed two days and made up for it the next. Steps forward. My aims are still the same, try and find a routine that works better, and to try and get more layers of accountability over me."
Iman on a mission to complete her Hifz
Background: “When I was younger, I started memorizing some of the 30th juz, but I never finished and I didn't really think much about memorizing the Qur'ān. I officially started my Hifz journey towards the end of 2018. I experienced some struggles like excessive sleepiness, and I learned later that it was depression. Alhamdulilāh I've been trying to change my lifestyle a bit more after getting some therapy, and I am feeling better than some years ago.”
Current Goal: “Currently, I am memorizing my 12th juz, but I have some weak ajzaa' that I'm also trying to get back, in shā Allāh. My goal is to finish memorizing by the end of the next Hijri year (1445), in shā Allāh.”
Week 4 Hifz Diary: I didn’t hear from her this week. Hopefully, we can share the updates next week.

Story by Dr Amr Khaled
I just have a question for you, how long do you spend in traffic?
And how’s your mood during that time?
I’ll tell you a true story about me, and through it I’ll give you a magical formula!
When I was 20 years old, I travelled to London for studying & working for a year, during that year and like any young man in my age,I was worried about myself so I decided to keep Qur’an always by my side and with me in my pocket.
And one day while I was reading, I read a beautiful verse from Surat Yaseen (Yaseen and the wise Qur’an) so I thought to myself, if I have something that wise right by my side, how my life would be? How would it be if I have my Qur’an with me all the time in my life? I was so attached to Qur’an. My work was in the middle of London & due to the high rental cost I rented a place away from London by an hour by underground.
One hour on a daily basis is such a boring and hard thing to do. So I decided to read Qur’an for that whole hour. I got more & more attached to the Qur’an to the extent that I learned Surat AL Nesaa’.
Something I didn’t do before, I did it while I was in the underground, until that long distance became my favorite part of the day, that I couldn’t wait till the end of the day to start revising what I learned before.
I didn’t feel so depressed any more.
When I got back to Egypt, and with its jammed traffic I started to do the same thing and started to say some prayers (mentioning Allah “tasabeh”), or listen to something valuable and useful in the radio. And as a result, I learned 20 chapters (Juze) of Qur’an during transportation time only!
So this is my story of learning Qur’an, God’s Book. I suggest that you do the same, read Qur’an or a useful book anything useful to help you invest a quality time in that wasted time of traffic. Transform the depressing & boring time into a useful precious time so you can gain a smile of hope.
