Hifz Advice For Slow Readers Of The Quran (5 min read)
By default, we should all be slow readers or reciters of the Qur’ān. Slow recitation is vital for absorbing the message of the Qur’ān and for reflecting on what Allāh is saying. When reciting the Qur’ān, the Beloved Prophet (ﷺ) was instructed by Allāh to recite with ‘tarteel’ (73:4). This means to recite slowly with measure, clarity, making each letter and word distinct, and making stops well. This means reciting with Tajweed and Tadabbur (reflection).
So why would someone say they need to recite faster?
📖 THE DIARY OF A HĀFIZ
This is where we try to learn by watching others memorise. Here's a roundup reporting the progress of a brother and two sisters in their pursuit of memorising the Qur'ān.
Muhammad, 35, starting all over again
Background: He'd forgotten what he memorised (half the Qur'ān) and has kept struggling to start again ever since. After 19 weeks of struggle, he finally started again. He is now in his 3rd month of memorisation.
What he accomplished last week: "Last week didn't go to plan (days 95 to 97 of the journey). I broke my routine after traveling and haven't recited for the last 4 days. I had managed to do some revision. I've been very tired. I will need to get back into routine next week!"
Leana, a first-time mother
Background: She memorised the last 7/8 juz in her late teens/the early twenties on her own, without a teacher, never managing to complete memorisation. Now she's started again.
Week 10: Not heard from her this week again! Allāh grant her health, strength and ease.
Aishah, a 5th-year Medical Student who's also a student of Arabiyyah
Background: She started hifdh when she was a child and memorised half. But recently started again from Juz' 1. She's had two good weeks of memorisation (an-Nisaa') and revision.
Week 10: "AlhamduliLlah, the week went well. Hifdh: I memorised 6 pages during the weekend as planned- Suratul A'araf verses 31 - Suratul A'araf verse 73. Muraaja'a: I've completed the revision of and Juz 5 and 6 last week and I've started Juz 7 on Monday. I found some parts of Suratul Nisa to be a bit weak and I'll work on it, Bi idhni Llah. For my Kahf till Naas, I'm done with Juz 25 and will start with Juz 24 tomorrow. A Rub'u daily as usual."
Allāh grant us all success and ease on this path!
