Assalāmu ‘Alaykum!

Hope you’re all doing well. Allah grant ease and blessing.

We are in the final sprint of Ramadān, the hunt for Laylat-ul-Qadr is on, Qur’ān recitations are reaching their khatm, and our hands are raised in du’ā’.

I’m in and out of I’tikāf at the moment, if anyone wants any specific du’ā’, please leave a comment or a reply. As such, I’ve not had time for new content.

Many of you reach out to me asking for du'ā', ad'iyāt, azkār, or awrād that you can use to help you with your Qur'ān memorisation. A du'ā' for memory? Are there any du'ā' that you can recite to make Hifz easier? Are there any wazā'if to help you with your memory? Are there any ways to make your progress with Hifz better?

Although there is no better du'ā' than consistent action itself. There are tried and tested du'ā', ad'iyāt, azkār or awrād that you can use to help you memorise faster and easily.

📖 THE DIARY OF A HĀFIZ

This is where we try to learn by watching others memorise. A roundup reporting the progress of two brothers and a sister in their pursuit of memorising the Qur'ān:

👳🏼‍♂️Muhammad, 36, founder

• Background: After forgetting what he memorised (half the Qur'ān) and kept struggling to start again. So he decided to share his diary and mission with us. After 19 weeks of struggle, he finally started. It took him a few months to do a few Juz’. He’s a few months away from having a years diary complete.

• What he accomplished last week (1 year, week 30):

  “Things have not worked out as I’ve wanted. I’ve been continuing my Qur’ān recitation and have complete 25 Juz’. For Hifz, I have been reciting the 10 pages of the 7th and a Juz’ a day from the back - all my looking. Not ideal but time and energy has been pretty low as I recite after Taraweeh. During the last week of Ramdan now I’ll focus on completion and starting to think about how to transition out of Ramadan and start a new routine. Isha is now very late over here and the nights are short so something will need to change.”

🧕🏿Halima, 47, school teacher

• Background: A 47 years old Black American Muslim school teacher. She has 3 adult children who are in university and grad school, Alhamdulillāh. She began memorizing the Quran about 5 years ago. It's been on and off with different teachers and motivation levels. She was inspired as a child to memorize Quran but my family lacked the access to a madrassah due to financial costs. She is the oldest of eight children. As a child she had never read more than the last ten surahs. Later in life,  she  rekindled her connection with Allah swt, and began taking tajwid classes in 2011, then finished her first reading of a khatam of Qur'an to her teacher in tajwid, from then her hifz struggles eased a bit. Currently, she is memorizing Surah al Maidah with Ustadha Sofia. 

• Week 18:

“And be patient, [O Muhammad], your steadfastness comes only from Allah. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire.” [Surah An Nahl (16:127)]

Be in remembrance of Allah swt and have patience. These days have been filled with love, joy, fatigue, seeking. Some times my hifz goes slow and other times I'm on a rhythmic steady flow, like a train ride and alhamdulillah I have an opportunity to draw near Allah. No one will do this work for me. I pray for an atoms worth of sincerity, just keep moving whether I experience highs or I'm distracted with outcomes, grief or disappointment. I'm warming up to just appreciate the invitation for remembrance. Allah grant us ease and Your nearness. Allahumma Barik 

🧑‍💻Hasan, 27, busy full-time engineer

• Background: Hasan memorised the Qur’ān when he was young but unfortunately he forgot it. Just over a year ago, he tried to resume his memorisation and managed to do up to 7 Juz’. But then life threw it’s challenges and his memorisation came to a stop. He got in touch last week with Qari’ for his time and has resumed his memorisation with a new plan.

• Week 4: He has now finished Juz’ 3 and 4. I’ll be giving him a test today on them, I’m sure that he does well, in shā’ Allāh. He’s continued to do a quarter a day so far. His struggles might now begin from the 5th and 6th Juz’. Allāh grant ease to him and you.

⚒️ MOTIVATION, TIPS & TOOLS

Some du’ā’ to read and use (I haven’t ever shared these before):

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ وَمِنْ كَرَمِكَ أَنْ تَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيَّ بِحِفْظِ الْقُرْآنِ وَتُكَرِّمَنِي بِثَبَاتِهِ فِي قَلْبِي، وَتَرْزُقَنِي الْعَمَلَ بِهِ وَفَهْمَهُ وَحُسْنَ الْقِيَامِ بِوَاجِبِهِ.
O Allah, I beseech You for Your favour and generosity to grace me with the Hifz of the Quran in my heart, provide me with the ability to act upon it, to understand it, and fulfil its obligations excellently.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تُيَسِّرَ لِي حِفْظَ الْقُرْآنِ الْكَرِيمِ، وَأَنْ تُسَهِّلَ عَلَيَّ اسْتِيعَابَ آيَاتِ الْكِتَابِ الْعَظِيمِ، وَأَنْ تَجْعَلَنِي مِنَ الْحَفَظَةِ الْمُجْتَهِدِينَ.
O Allah, I ask You to ease for me the memorisation of the Noble Quran, to facilitate my comprehension of the verses of this magnificent book, and to make me among the diligent hardworking memorisers.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَسْتَعْمِلَنِي وَلَا تَسْتَبْدِلَنِي، وَأَنْ تَتُوبَ عَلَيَّ وَتَغْفِرَ لِي، وَأَنْ تُكَرِّمَنِي بِحِفْظِ كِتَابِكَ الْعَزِيزِ، وَأَنْ تُيَسِّرَ لِي ذَلِكَ وَتُعِينَنِي عَلَيْهِ يَا إِلَهِي وَيَا مَوْلَايَ.
O Allah, I pray that You use me and not replace me, that You turn towards me and forgive me, that You honour me with the Hifz of Your Noble Book, that You facilitate this for me and assist me in it, O my God and my Master.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ أَمَنِيَّتِي فِي خَتْمِ الْقُرْآنِ الْكَرِيمِ حِفْظًا وَفَهْمًا تَزْدَادُ فِي قَلْبِي يَوْمًا بَعْدَ يَوْمٍ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ يَا رَبِّي أَنْ تُيَسِّرَ لِي حِفْظَهُ وَأَنْ تَمْنَحَنِي الصَّبْرَ عَلَى الْمُرَاجَعَةِ وَقُوَّةَ الْحَافِظَةِ وَسُرْعَةَ الْبَدِيهَةِ.
O Allah, my aspiration to complete the memorisation and understanding of the Noble Quran grows in my heart day by day. I ask You, my Master, to ease its memorsation for me, grant me patience in reviewing it, strength in retaining it, and quickness in comprehension.

اللَّهُمَّ سَهِّلْ عَلَيَّ حِفْظَ الْقُرْآنِ وَفَهْمَهُ، وَأَعِنِّي عَلَى تَعَلُّمِ تَجْوِيدِ الْقُرْآنِ، وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْعَامِلِينَ بِهِ، وَاجْعَلْهُ حُجَّةً لِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ.
O Allah, make easy for me the memorisation and understanding of the Quran, aid me in learning its recitation with proper tajweed, make me among those who act upon it, and let it be a proof for me on the Day of Judgment.

اللَّهُمَّ حَفِظْنَا الْقُرْآنَ كَمَا تُحَفِظُهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ، وَاسْتَعْمِلْنَا، وَأَشْغَلْنَا وَاكْفِنَا بِهِ عَمَّنْ سِوَاهُ لِوَجْهِكَ الْكَرِيمِ وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ وَالشُّكْرُ.
O Allah, preserve us with the Quran as You preserve it with the angels, use us, occupy us, and suffice us with it over anyone else for the sake of Your Noble Countenance. And to You belongs all praise and gratitude.

اللَّهُمَّ بَدِيعَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ وَالْعِزَّةِ الَّتِي لَا تُرَامُ: أَسْأَلُكَ يَا أَللَّهُ يَا رَحْمَنُ بِجَلَالِكَ وَنُورِ وَجْهِكَ أَنْ تُلْزِمَ قَلْبِي حِفْظَ كِتَابِكَ كَمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي أَنْ أَتْلُوَهُ عَلَى النَّحْوِ الَّذِي يُرْضِيكَ عَنِّي.
O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of Majesty, Honour, and Might that cannot be breached: I ask You, O Allah, O Merciful, by Your Glory and the Light of Your Countenance, to make my heart adhere to the preservation of Your Book as You have taught me, and grant me the ability to recite it in a manner that pleases You.

اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي بِتَرْكِ الْمَعَاصِي أَبَدًا مَا أَبْقَيْتَنِي، وَارْحَمْنِي أَنْ أَتَكَلَّفَ مَا لَا يَعْنِينِي، وَارْزُقْنِي حُسْنَ النَّظَرِ فِيمَا يُرْضِيكَ عَنِّي
O Allah, have mercy on me by enabling me to abandon sins for as long as You keep me alive, and have mercy on me to not concern myself with what does not matter to me, and grant me the grace of discernment in what pleases You.

اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنَا الْقُرْآنَ كَمَا تُحْفَظُهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَاسْتَعْمِلْنَا وَاشْغَلْنَا وَاكْفِنَا بِهِ عَمَّنْ سِوَاهُ لِوَجْهِكَ الْكَرِيمِ. وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ وَالشُّكْرُ أَكْثَرُ وَأَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ وَإِلَيْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَدَدَ خَلْقِكَ وَرِضَا نَفْسِكَ وَزِنَةَ عَرْشِكَ وَمِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِكَ.
O Allah, protect us with the Quran as the angels are protected, use us, occupy us, and make us independent of others through it for Your Noble Countenance. And to You belongs all praise and gratitude, more and dearer to You and to us than anything, equivalent to the number of Your creation, the satisfaction of Your Self, the weight of Your Throne, and the ink of Your words.

اللَّهُمَّ اشْغَلْنَا وَاكْفِنَا عَنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ بِقُرْآنِكَ وَتَهْلِيلِكَ وَذِكْرِكَ وَتَوْحِيدِكَ وَتَسْبِيحِكَ وَحَمْدِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ.
O Allah, occupy us and suffice us with Your Quran, Your glorification, Your remembrance, Your unification, Your praise, and Your gratitude, away from everything else.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَقْطَعِ الْقُرْآنَ مِنْ قُلُوبِنَا وَلَا مِنْ بُيُوتِنَا وَاجْعَلْهُ مِيرَاثًا لَنَا فِي أَوْلَادِنَا مِنْ بَعْدِنَا.
O Allah, do not sever the Quran from our hearts or our homes, and make it an inheritance for us in our children after us.
